The Sea Saw and Fled - Psalms 114:3

In Psalms one hundred fourteen the Psalmist shared about, “when Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language. Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion”, and in chapter one hundred fourteen and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “the sea saw it, and fled” where we read,

The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.

The verse begins, The sea saw it, and fled: The Psalmist began with the words, “the sea saw it” which means “the large body of water such as the Red, Dead and Mediterranean Seas observed, looked at, inspected and considered”, “and fled” or “and escaped, took flight, departed and disappeared”. The Psalmist said the large body of water observed how Jehovah God made Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion” and they took flight and departed.

The verse goes on to say, “Jordan was driven back.” The Psalmist continued with the word, “Jordan” whose name means “descender” and was “the river of Palestine running from the roots of Anti-Lebanon to the Dead Sea a distance of approximately two hundred miles or three hundred and twenty kilometers” “was driven back” or “existed as turned to the rear or backwards”. The Psalmist said the “Jordan River” changed direction at the power and sacredness of Jehovah God.

When we meditate upon the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn how the “sea and river” were affected by the actions of Jehovah God. God created the “seas and rivers” of the world, and the idea was that even the terrain and waters are subject to God. God created people as well, and He knows they have been separated from Him by their sins. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and oversee our lives as well as the “seas and rivers” that may “flee and be driven back” at His will.

Next time the Psalmist says, “the mountains skipped like rams”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
