In Psalms one hundred nine David said, “Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to your mercy. That they may know that this is your hand; that you, LORD, have done it. Let them curse, but bless you: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let your servant rejoice”, and in chapter one hundred nine and verse twenty-nine of Psalms David said, “let my adversaries be clothed with shame” where we read,
Let my adversaries be clothed with shame,
and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.
The verse begins, “Let my adversaries be clothed with shame, ...” David began with the words, “let my adversaries” or “allow and permit my, David's, resistant and opposing ones to” “be clothed with shame” which means “to be wrapped and arrayed by the means of disgrace, reproach, confusion, dishonor, insult and ignominy”. David wanted God to allow his opposing foes to be arrayed with confusion and reproach.
The verse continues, “... and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.” David added the words, “and let them” or “and allow and permit them, David's adversaries to” “cover themselves” which means “wrap, envelope and veil their own selves” “with their own confusion” or “by the use of their, the adversaries of David's, own personal humiliation, chagrin and embarrassment”, “as with a mantle” which means “like and similar to a garment worn over a tunic or robe”. David wanted his adversaries to veil their own selves with humiliation like an upper garment worn over a tunic or robe.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David continued to appeal to Jehovah God to contend with his adversaries. He wanted them to be embarrassed, and the humiliation they caused others, David wanted to come upon them. God will indeed take vengeance upon people according to His perfect will and plan, (See Romans 12:19) however, He offers salvation through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we humble ourselves, ask for forgiveness and yield to Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and bring humiliation and chagrin upon those who oppose us and Him as He sees best.
Next time David says, “I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
