As the Apple of Your Eye - Proverbs 7:2

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said “My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you”, and in chapter seven and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “keep my commandments … as the apple of your eye” where we read,

Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye.

The verse begins, Keep my commandments, and live;. Solomon began with the words, keep my commandmentsor “guard, watch over, observe and protect my, Solomon's, ordinances, precepts and laws”, and live which means “and remain alive, sustain life, be alive and prosperous”. Solomon instructed his son so observe his ordinances and he would remain alive and sustain life.

The verse continues, “... and my law as the apple of your eye.” Solomon added the words, “and my law” or “and my, Solomon's, direction, instruction and codes of law” “as the apple of your eye” which means “even like unto the pupil or middle deepest and blackest part or your, the son of Solomon's, physical eye”. Solomon told his son that he was to guard and watch over his instruction in a similar manner that he protects his physical eye.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how he knew his son would be greatly benefited if he observed his directions for life. His son was to guard and protect them as though it was the pupil in his physical eye. God wants us to “keep” his “law”, and when we do what He says, we are blessed in our lives. However, when we violate His commandments, we sin and become separated from a personal relationship with Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to “keep” His law as close to us as the “pupil” in our eye.

Next time Solomon says to his son, “bind them upon your fingers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
