In the book of Proverbs Solomon said “whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul. A wound and dishonor shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though you give many gifts”, and in chapter seven and verse one of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, keep my words” where we read,
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you.
The verse begins, “My son, keep my words, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “my son” or “my, Solomon's, male offspring and progeny”, “keep my words” which means “guard, watch over, observe and protect my, Solomon's, utterances, declarations and proclamations”. Solomon instructed his son to watch over and observe his utterances and proclamations.
The verse goes on to say, “... and lay up my commandments with you.” Solomon continued with the words, “and lay up my commandments” or “and treasure, store up and hide my, Solomon's, ordinances, precepts and laws” “with you” which means “alongside and beside you, Solomon's son”. Solomon added that his son should store up and hide his ordinances and precepts within him.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon once again exhorted his son to pay attention to his “words”. Solomon knew his precepts would protect his son from devastation and destruction in his life. God has done the same for us. He gave us His scriptures, the Bible, so we would know how He wants us to live. When we keep His law, our lives are better for it, and when we violate His law, we reveal the sin nature that is within us. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of observing His “commandments” and hiding His “words” within our hearts. (See Psalm 119:11)
Next time Solomon says to his son, “keep my commandments, and live”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
