Keeping You From the Evil and Strange Woman - Proverbs 6:24

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-four of Proverbs Solomon said, “to keep you from the evil woman” where we read,

To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

The verse begins, To keep you from the evil woman, .... Solomon began with the words, “to keep you” or “to guard, watch over, protect and preserve you, Solomon's son” “from the evil woman” which means “separate and apart from the bad, disagreeable, malignant, unpleasant, miserable, unkind and hurtful female human being ”. Solomon shared how his commandment and the “law” of his mother would preserve his son from the unkind and hurtful female.

The verse goes on to say, “... from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.” Solomon continued with the words, “from the flattery” or “separate and apart from the smooth and slippery words or portion” “of the tongue” which means “belonging to the wedge in the mouth used for speaking” “of a strange woman” or “belonging to the foreign, alien, unfamiliar and unknown harlot or prostitute”. Solomon said his “commandment” and the “law” of his mother would preserve his son from the smooth talking and speaking of the “tongue” of the harlot or prostitute.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon wanted his son to observe his commandment and his mother's law to protect him from the smooth talking of a harlot or prostitute. God wants to protect us from danger and harm as well. He gave His “commandments” to us so we would have a good life and be protected from harmful consequences for disobeying them. However, we have violated the law of God and have thereby sinned. “The wages of sin is death” (See Romans 6:23), so God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and whosoever believes in Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Let us give attention to Solomon's warning to his son and realize God has our preservation and best interest in mind as well.

Next time Solomon says, “lust not after her beauty in your heart”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
