In the book of Proverbs Solomon said “My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye”, and in chapter seven and verse three of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “bind them upon your fingers” where we read,
Bind them upon your fingers, write them upon the table of your heart.
The verse begins, “Bind them upon your fingers, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “bind them” or “tie, confine and join them, the words and commandments of Solomon, together” “upon your fingers” which means “on your, the son of Solomon's, physical fingers”. Solomon told his son to wrap his “words and commandments” on his physical fingers.
The verse goes on to say, “... write them upon the table of your heart.” Solomon continued with the words, “write them” or “record, enroll, inscribe and engrave them, Solomon's words and commandments” “upon the table of your heart” which means “on the slab, tablet and plank of your, the son of Solomon's, soul, mind, will, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and affections”. Solomon said his son was to inscribe his “words and commandments” on the tablet of his soul, mind and will.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon knew his words and commandments were so important that his son was to attach them to his “fingers” and inscribe them on the tablet of his soul. God loves us, and His laws are not only to be in our memory, but we are to also engrave them upon our “hearts”. God's words and commandments are perfect, and we are to keep all of them. However, we violate His commandments, and therefore we have sinned. Sin separates us from a personal relationship with God, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross so when we believe and trust in Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and be given His Holy Spirit who will remind us of His “words and commandments” so will “bind” them to our “fingers” and “write” them within our “hearts”.
Next time Solomon says to his son, “say unto wisdom, you are my sister”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
