In the book of Proverbs Solomon told his son that wicked people, “eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day”, and in chapter four and verse nineteen of Proverbs Solomon said the wicked, “the way of the wicked is as darkness” where we read,
The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
The verse begins, “The way of the wicked is as darkness:”. Solomon began with the words, “the way of the wicked” or “the path, travels, journeys and passing of life belonging to the criminal people who are guilty of crime, evil and hostile to God” “is as darkness” which means “exists similar and in likeness to gloominess, calamity and misfortune”. Solomon shared how the journey through life for people who are evil and hostile to God is gloomy and filled with misfortune.
The verse goes on to say, “they know not at what they stumble.” Solomon continued with the words, “they know not” or “they, the wicked people, do not perceive, distinguish, see or recognize” “at what they stumble” which means “wherein, whereby and wherewith they, the wicked people, totter, stagger and become weak and feeble”. Solomon said evil people are unaware of that which causes them to become weak and feeble.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon knew the lives of people who are evil and wicked are gloomy and filled with misfortune. They are unaware of that which causes them to become weak and feeble, and this is not what God wants for their lives. God knows we “all have sinned and come short of” His “glory”, (See Romans 3:23) and “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. (See Romans 6:23) We have a choice. We can believe and trust in Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and be forgiven, or we can refuse God's offer and live a life in “darkness” without realizing what has caused us to become weak and feeble.
Next time Solomon says, “my son, attend to my words”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
