In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not: neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you”, and in chapter four and verse seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “wisdom is the principal thing” where we read,
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.
The verse begins, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom:”. Solomon began with the word, “wisdom” or “skill, shrewdness and prudence” “is the principal thing” which means “exists as the beginning, chief, first and choice thing”; “therefore get wisdom” or “then, wherefore, thus and this being so acquire, obtain and possess skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon said skill, shrewdness and prudence exist as the chief and most important action to obtain, and therefore his son should possess these traits.
The verse goes on to say, “and with all your getting get understanding.” Solomon continued with the words, “and with all your getting” or “'and by the use of each, every, the whole and everything with your, Solomon's children's, acquiring, possessing and obtaining” “get understanding” which means “acquire, possess and obtain discernment, knowledge and meaning”. Solomon instructed his children in every part of their obtaining and possessing to acquire discernment and knowledge.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon knew the primary value of skill and prudence, and he instructed his children to employ every part of their possessing to acquire both “wisdom and understanding”. Knowing and employing what is known is to be a primary desire in our lives, and because God offers His “wisdom” to everyone, we should seek Him with all our being. (See Matthew 6:33 and James 1:5) When we surrender our lives to God's Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His “wisdom and understanding” for our lives on earth and in the eternal Heaven to come.
Next time Solomon says, “exalt her, and she shall promote you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
