In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow your ear to my understanding”, and in chapter five and verse two of Proverbs Solomon told his son, “that you may regard discretion” where we read,
That you may regard discretion, and that your lips may keep knowledge.
The verse begins, “That you may regard discretion, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “that you may regard” or “so you, Solomon's son, might keep, observe and give heed to” “discretion” which means “purpose, device, plot, intent and witty invention”. Solomon shared how his son would observe and give heed to his purpose and intent when he attended to his wisdom and bowed down his ear to his understanding.
The verse continues, “... and that your lips may keep knowledge.” Solomon added the words, “and that your lips” or “and so your, the son of Solomon's, lips used for speaking” “may keep knowledge” which means “might guard, watch over, observe and preserve perception, skill and discernment”. Solomon said his son would give attention to perception and discernment in his speech when he followed his “wisdom and understanding”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the benefit his son would receive by paying attention to his father's wisdom and understanding. God wants our lives to be blessed, and when we discern and observe his wise ways and regard his “understanding”, we will live the best life we are able to live. God loves us, and He proved His love by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to regard his “discretion” so our “lips” will preserve His discernment.
Next time Solomon tells his son, “the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
