In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not: neither decline from the words of my mouth”, and in chapter four and verse six of Proverbs Solomon said of wisdom and understanding, “forsake her not, and she shall preserve you” where we read,
Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you.
The verse begins, “Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you:”. Solomon began with the words, “forsake her not” or “do not leave, abandon, neglect, let go or depart from her, wisdom and understanding”, “and she shall preserve you” which means “and she, wisdom and understanding, will keep, guard, watch over and protect you, Solomon's children”. Solomon instructed his children not to abandon wisdom and understanding and they would keep and protect them.
The verse continues, “love her, and she shall keep you .” Solomon added the words, “love her” or “have an appetite for, be a friend of and have passion and affection for her, wisdom and understanding”, “and she shall keep you” which means “and she, wisdom and understanding, will guard, watch over and protect you, Solomon's children”. Solomon told his children to have passion and affection for wisdom and understanding and they would watch over and protect them as well.
When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we discover how important wisdom and understanding were to be for his children. They were never to abandon them, and they were to have deep affection for them. The result would be the preservation and protection of his children as they took heed to and observe them. God loves us, and He provided wisdom and understanding to Solomon for his children and for us as well. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to “keep” His wisdom and understanding so we shall be preserved and protected in our lives.
Next time Solomon says, “wisdom is the principal thing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
