In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow your ear to my understanding. That you may regard discretion, and that your lips may keep knowledge”, and in chapter five and verse three of Proverbs Solomon told his son, “the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb” where we read,
For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
The verse begins, “For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “for the lips” or “because, since and on account that the lips used for speaking” “of a strange woman” which means “belonging to a foreign, loathsome female human being who is a prostitute or harlot” “drop as a honeycomb” or “distill, prophesy, preach and hold discourse similar and in likeness to flowing honey from the comb”. Solomon began to share with his son about the smoothness of speech belonging to prostitutes and harlots.
The verse goes on to say, “... and her mouth is smoother than oil:” Solomon continued with the words, “and her mouth” or “and her, the strange woman's, orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking” “is smoother than oil” which means “exists as more slick and flattering compared to fatness, medicament, unguent and anointing oil”. Solomon said the “mouth” of the woman who is a harlot is more flattering and slick than unguent anointing oil.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon began to describe the characteristics of women who would flatter with their words in an attempt to persuade his son. The idea is to protect his son from sorrowful results from complying with the temptress's words. God knows there are temptations in our lives, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the times when we err from His best for us. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to be wise with those who would tempt us to fall into their pernicious ways.
Next time Solomon tells his son, “her end is bitter as wormwood”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
