In the book of Proverbs Solomon asked, “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-eight of Proverbs Solomon asked, “can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?” where we read,
Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
The verse begins, “Can one go upon hot coals, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “can one go upon” or “is a person whether male or female able and capable to depart, proceed and walk on” “hot coals” which means “burning, glowing and kindled embers” without the following happening. Solomon asked whether a person is able to walk on burning embers without the following occurring.
The verse goes on to say, “... and his feet not be burned?” Solomon continued with the words, “and his feet” or “and his, the person's, physical feet” “not be burned” which means “no and not in any way being scorched, blistered and branded”. Solomon questioned whether the person who walks upon burning embers does so without being scorched and blistered on their “feet”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon employed another example to say there are consequences to laying hold of a prostitute. Even as the “feet” of a person are scorched when they walk upon burning embers, so will the person who attached themselves to a harlot be branded. God wants to keep us from these consequences, so He gave us His law to protect us from them. When we obey Him, we are blessed, but when we forsake His words, we sin and suffer destruction. God loves us, and He proved it by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, errors, wrongs and disobedience to His law. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His Holy Spirit to give us the power to resist temptations and the suffering that disobeying God incurs.
Next time Solomon says, “so he that goes in to his neighbor's wife”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
