Take Hold of Instruction - Proverbs 4:13

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, “I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. When you go, your steps shall not be straitened; and when you run, you shall not stumble”, and in chapter four and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon said to his son, take fast hold of instruction” where we read,

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is your life.

The verse begins, “Take fast hold of instruction;. Solomon began with the words, “take fast hold” or “strengthen, prevail, harden and be strong” “of instruction” which means “pertaining to discipline, chastening and correction”. Solomon told his son to strengthen himself and be strong in discipline and correction.

The verse goes on to say, “let her not go: keep her; for she is your life.” Solomon added the words, “let her not go” or “do not allow or permit her, instruction, to weaken, cease and be abated”: “keep her” which means “guard, watch over and observe her, instruction”; “for she is your life” or “because, since and on account that she, instruction, exists as your, the son of Solomon's, living, flowing, freshness and activity”. Solomon said that his son was not to allow instruction to cease because instruction was the flowing and freshness of his living and activity.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we discover how much he cared for the life of his son. Solomon knew when his son followed a disciplined and correct way of living, he would be blessed. Solomon wanted his son to watch over and observe instruction because instruction would give him a fresh, flowing and good “life”. God wants to bless us with His teaching, correction and discipline, and we should realize He loves us so much that He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins to prove it. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His “instruction” for living in a manner that is good and pleasing to Him.

Next time Solomon says to his son, enter not into the path of the wicked, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
