In the book of Proverbs Solomon said “Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-one of Proverbs Solomon said of the thief, “if he is found, he shall restore sevenfold” where we read,
But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
The verse begins, “But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold;”. Solomon began with the words, “but if he be found” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover in case and whether he, the person who steals, is detected and discovered”, “he shall restore sevenfold” which means “he, the person who steals, is to make a peaceful and complete recompense covenant seven times as much as he stole”. Solomon shared when the thief is discovered, he is to recompense and repay seven times as much as he stole.
The verse continues, “he shall give all the substance of his house.” Solomon added the words, “he shall give” or “he, the person who stole, is to put, set, grant, bestow and dedicate” “all the substance” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the wealth and riches” “of his house” or “belonging to his, the person who stole's, dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Solomon said the thief is to provide all the wealth and riches within his dwelling place to repay his debt.
When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the thief is to repay seven times what he stole. Even if it costs him all the valuables in his home, the thief was to compensate those from whom he took. This illustration was employed by Solomon to share with his son how there is an outlet for the repayment of items that are stolen by a person, however, there is no repayment that satisfies the debt for adultery. God knows this, and His advice and command is to not commit adultery. Jesus put it this way, “whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.” (See Matthew 5:28) In other words, the lust within a person's heart reveals their sin. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and satisfy our debt that can in no other way be paid.
Next time Solomon says, “whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
