In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provides her meat in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest”, and in chapter six and verse nine of Proverbs Solomon asked, “how long will you sleep, O sluggard?” where we read,
How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep?
The verse begins, “How long will you sleep, O sluggard?” Solomon began with the words, “how long will you sleep” or “for what length of time shall you, person who is as follows, slumber or rest”, “O sluggard” which means “O sluggish, indolent and slothful person”? Solomon questioned for what length of time the lazy and slothful person would slumber and rest.
The verse continues, “when will you arise out of your sleep?” Solomon added the words, “when will you arise” or “at what time and moment shall you, O sluggard, stand, rise up, endure, be fixed and proven” “out of your sleep” which means “from your slumber or rest”? Solomon continued to ask the sluggish person at what time and moment he would rise up from his slumber and rest.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon wanted to know how long the sluggish person was going to slumber and rest. He also wanted to know at what time they would finally get up from sleeping. In other words, this person was lazy. God does not want us to be without purpose and drive, and we are to use our time wisely. God loves us, and He knows what is best for us in this life and in the eternal life to come. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to rise up from our resting and be industrious for Him within His Kingdom.
Next time Solomon shares about, “a little sleep” and “a little slumber”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
