In the book of Proverbs Solomon asked, “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-nine of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that goes in to his neighbor's wife … shall not be innocent” where we read,
So he that goes in to his neighbor's wife; whosoever touches her shall not be innocent.
The verse begins, “So he that goes in to his neighbor's wife;”. Solomon began with the words, “so he that goes in to” or “even thus and indeed the person who enters and is brought into” “his neighbor's wife” which means “the female spouse of his, the person's, intimate friend and companion”. Solomon shared how the person who enters into his companion's spouse is similar to the person who is “burned” by taking fire to their chest and walks upon burning embers.
The verse continues, “whosoever touches her shall not be innocent.” Solomon added the words, “whosoever touches her” or “whatever person reaches, extends, approaches and is stricken with her, the wife of a neighbor” “shall not be innocent” which means “will in no way exist as empty, clean, pure or purged”. Solomon said whatever person is stricken with their “neighbor's wife” will in no way be pure or clean.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon brought to a finish his idea of not yielding to the temptations of an adulterous woman. A person is unable to take fire into their chest or walk upon burning embers without having devastating results. God wants to keep us from this sort of damage and destruction within our lives, so He gave us His commandments and instructions to guide us according to His ways. When we violate His law, we sin, and when we sin, the consequence is death. For this reason God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit power to resist temptations and keep away from the consequences that accompany disobedience.
Next time Solomon says, “men do not despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy his soul”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
