In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them about your neck”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-two of Proverbs Solomon said, “when you go, it shall lead you” where we read,
When you go, it shall lead you; when you sleep, it shall keep you;
and when you awake, it shall talk with you.
The verse begins, “When you go, it shall lead you; when you sleep, it shall keep you;”. Solomon began with the words, “when you go” or “at the time and moment you, Solomon's son, depart, proceed and go away”, “it shall lead you” which means “it, the commandment of his father and the law of his mother, will transport and guide you, Solomon's son”; “when you sleep” or “at the time and moment you, Solomon's son, relax, slumber and rest”, “it shall keep you” which means “it, the commandment of his father and the law of his mother, will guard, watch over, observe and protect you, Solomon's son”. Solomon told his son that his commandment and his mother's law would guide him during his waking hours, and guard over him when he slept.
The verse goes on to say, “and when you awake, it shall talk with you.” Solomon continued with the words, “and when you awake” or “and at the time and moment you, Solomon's son, arouse, show signs of waking and abruptly start up from sleep”, “it shall talk with you” which means “it, the commandment of his father and the law of his mother, will mediate, commune, speak alongside and beside you, Solomon's son”. Solomon said at the time and moment his son woke up his commandment and his mother's law would speak to him.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover how Solomon knew if his son kept his commandment and his mother's law, they would guide him in his life and protect him as he slept. At the time his son woke up, his father's commandment and mother's law would be speaking to him. God wants us to constantly have his way of living within our hearts, souls and mind, and when we do, our lives are better. God loves us, and He gave us His law to protect and preserve us. We violated His law and have thereby sinned, so He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for all our errors and wrongs. When we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of keeping His law while we are awake and when we sleep.
Next time Solomon says, “the commandment is a lamp”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
