In the book of Proverbs Solomon shared about a young man who was enticed by a harlot, and he described the woman of the streets as one who, “is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: Now is she without, now in the streets, and lies in wait at every corner.) So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, ...”, and in chapter seven and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon shared how the woman said, “I have peace offerings with me” where we read,
I have peace offerings with me; this day have I paid my vows.
The verse begins, “I have peace offerings with me;”. Solomon began with the words, “I have peace offerings” or “I, the woman with the attire of a harlot, own, possess and obtain sacrificial alliances, requitals and sacrifices of thanks” “with me” which means “beside and alongside me, the woman dressed as a harlot”. Solomon shared how the woman told the naive young man that she possessed sacrifices of thanks with her.
The verse goes on to say, “this day have I paid my vows.” Solomon continued with the words, “this day” or “this particular sunrise to sunset” “have I paid my vows” which means “I, the woman with the attire of a harlot, completed and finished my votive offering or promises”. Solomon shared how the woman said she had completed her votive promises.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon that the woman dressed in the attire of a harlot told the young man that she was religiously pure because she offered “peace offerings” and “paid” her “vows”. In other words, according to the woman, she was purified to proceed with her malicious acts with the young man. She may have believed herself to be pure in her own eyes, but she was not so with God. God knows when we sin, and sin leads to death. (See Romans 3:23; 6:23) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us from our sins. No other means is capable to forgive and make us clean before God. (See 1 John 1:9)
Next time Solomon shares how the woman says, “therefore came I forth to meet you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
