In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “These six things does the LORD hate: yes, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren”, and in chapter six and verse twenty of Proverbs Solomon said, “my son, keep your father's commandment” where we read,
My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother:
The verse begins, “My son, keep your father's commandment, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “my son” or “my, Solomon's, male offspring and progeny”, “keep your father's commandment” which means “guard, watch over, preserve and observe with fidelity the ordinances, law, precepts and code of conduct of your, Solomon's, immediate male progenitor or ancestor”. Solomon instructed his “son” to watch over and observe his ordinance, precept and code of wisdom.
The verse goes on to say, “... and forsake not the law of your mother:” Solomon continued with the words, “and forsake not” or “and do not leave, cast off, reject or abandon” “the law of your mother” which means “the direction, instruction and code of law belonging to your, Solomon's son's, immediate female progeny and ancestor”. Solomon told his son not to reject or abandon the direction and instruction belonging to his “mother”.
When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we see how he directed his son to observe his ordinances and precepts, and he wanted his “son” keep his “mother's” direction as well. In other words, he was to obey his parents. (See Ephesians 6:1-2) God has His order of authority, and parents' instruction becomes a first measure for instruction and obedience. God wants us to observe His law, and because we have violated His commands, we have sin in our lives. “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (See Romans 6:23) He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we have faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us remember to “keep” the direction and instructions of God and the parents He has given to us.
Next time Solomon says, “bind them continually upon your heart”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
