In the book of Proverbs Solomon told his son, “Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil”, and in chapter five and verse one of Proverbs Solomon told his son, “attend unto my wisdom” where we read,
My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow your ear to my understanding.
The verse begins, “My son, attend unto my wisdom, ...”. Solomon began with the words, “my son” or “my, Solomon's, male offspring and progeny”, “attend unto my wisdom” which means “, be attentive, heed, pay attention to and incline your ear toward my, Solomon's, skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon instructed his “son” to pay attention to his skill, shrewdness and prudence.
The verse goes on to say, “... and bow your ear to my understanding.” Solomon continued with the words, “and bow your ear” or “and stretch our, extend, incline and bend your, the son of Solomon's, physical ear and mental and spiritual faculties” “to my understanding” which means “toward my, Solomon's, intelligence, insight and the object of knowledge”. Solomon told his son to extend his listening toward his insight and knowledge.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon directed his son to pay attention to his words of skill and knowledge. Solomon was experienced in the ways of God because God gave Him “wisdom” to govern over the people of Israel. (See 1 Kings 3:5-14) God is wise, and He is omniscient. We are able to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide his “wisdom and understanding” as we “attend and bow our ears” unto Him.
Next time Solomon tells his son, “ that you may regard discretion”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
