Get Wisdom and Understanding - Proverbs 4:5

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live”, and in chapter four and verse five of Proverbs Solomon said, “get wisdom, get understanding where we read,

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not:

neither decline from the words of my mouth.

The verse begins, “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not:. Solomon began with the words, “get wisdom” or “acquire, obtain and possess skill, shrewdness and prudence”, “get understanding” which means “acquire, obtain and possess discernment, faculty, knowledge and meaning”: “forget it not” or “do not ignore, cease to care for, mislay or be oblivious to it, wisdom and understanding”. Solomon instructed his son not to mislay or cease to care for skill, prudence, discernment and knowledge”.

The verse goes on to say, “neither decline from the words of my mouth.” Solomon continued with the words, “neither decline from the words” or “no and not in any way stretching out, extending, inclining, bending or perverting to be separate and apart from the noises and sounds of the utterances, speeches, sayings, promises and commands” “of my mouth” which means “belonging to my, Solomon's, orifice in the face used for drinking, eating or speaking”. Solomon told his son not to incline to be separated from the utterances or speeches that he spoke.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon instructed his son to obtain “wisdom and understanding”, and he was never to separate himself from the speeches that he spoke to him. Solomon knew as his son, and we too for that matter, keep wise ways and intelligence within his life, he would be benefited from them. God gave Solomon his skill, shrewdness and knowledge, and He will give to us as well when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. Sin separates us from a personal relationship with God, and when we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and not only provide us with His wise and intelligent ways, but also give us the ability to never be inclined to separate from them.

Next time Solomon says, forsake her not, and she shall preserve you, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
