Heavens the Work of God's Fingers - Psalms 8:3

Psalms chapter eight began with David's words, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! who has set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings have you ordained strength because of your enemies, that you might still the enemy and the avenger”, and in Psalms chapter eight and verse three David said, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers ...” where we read,

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;

The verse begins, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,...” David began with the words, “When I consider your heavens” which means “at the time and moment I, David, look at, perceive, regard and see your, the LORD's, atmosphere, universe and visible sky”, “the work of your fingers” or “the labor, undertaking, enterprise and achievement belonging to the LORD's fingers”. David shared how everything he observed in the sky, atmosphere and universe which were the labor of the LORD's fingers.

The verse continues, “... the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;” David added the words, “the moon” or “the moon in the night sky” “and the stars” or “and the stars as seen in the night sky”, “which you have ordained” which means “that you, O LORD, have made firm, established and securely determined”. David “considered” the moon and stars which God established and securely determined in their places.

When we think through the words in this verse, we begin to see why David proclaimed the LORD's name to be “excellent” and in what way He “ordained strength” through the mouth of “babes and sucklings”. David looked into the sky and considered the celestial bodies hung there. The “moon and the stars” were put in place and set by God, and because He created them, manages them and oversees them, He is indeed an “excellent” God. This same God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for our sins so that we may be forgiven and granted everlasting life with Him. The God of the Universe loves us, and He is willing to have an intimate personal relationship with everyone who yields their life to His Son Jesus. Praise be to the God who hung the moon and the stars!

Next time David asks, “What is man, that you are mindful of him?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
