In Psalms chapter seven David wrote, “My defense is of God, which saves the upright in heart. God judges the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he has bent his bow, and made it ready. He has also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordains his arrows against the persecutors. Behold, he travails with iniquity, and has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. He made a pit, and dug it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.”, and in chapter seven and verse sixteen of Psalms David said, “His mischief shall return upon his own head” where we read,
His mischief shall return upon his own head,
and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.
The verse begins, “His mischief shall return upon his own head, ...” David began with the words, “His mischief shall return” which means “the persecutor's misery, travail, sorrow and grievance will turn back, be delivered and recompensed” “upon his own head” or “on the persecutor's own physical head”. David shared how his persecutor would have his misery and sorrow turned back on his own physical head.
The verse continues, “... and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.” David added the words, “and his violent dealing” or “and the persecutor's wrong, cruelty and injustice” “shall come down” or “will descend, decline and sink down” “upon his own pate” which means “on the crown of his scalp or top of his head”. David wrote how his persecutor's cruelty and injustice would descend upon the crown of his own head.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how David believed his persecutor would suffer from the same misery and wrong that he planned for David himself. The law of reciprocity was at hand, and because David committed his defense to the LORD, he knew God would return to his adversary what he had planned for him. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus. When we put our faith and trust in Jesus, He becomes our protector and defense. Paul the apostle wrote, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” (See Galatians 6:17), and we can give honor and praise to God for His perfect plan for those who oppose us.
Next time David says, “I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
