Psalms chapter eight begins with the heading, “[[To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David.]]” which breaks down “to the chief Musician” or “to the overseer, preeminent and superintending choral director” “upon Gittith” which literally means “a wine-press and was known as a Gittite harp”, “A Psalm” or “a melody or poem set to notes” “of David” which means “belonging to David whose name means beloved and was the second king of Israel”, and in Psalms chapter eight and verse one David exclaimed, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth!” where we read,
O LORD our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth!
who has set your glory above the heavens.
The verse begins, “O LORD our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! ” David began with the words, “O LORD our Lord” which means “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God and is our firm, strong, lord, master and God”, “how excellent is your name” or “how majestic, great, gallant and glorious exists your, Jehovah's, reputation, fame and glory” “in all the earth” which means “within the whole, totality and everything in the arable land, country, territory and world”. David called out to Jehovah God and proclaimed the greatness of His reputation, fame and glory throughout the whole world.
The verse continues, “who has set your glory above the heavens.” David added the words, “who has set your glory” or “that has put, set, given, bestowed, granted, ascribed, devoted and consecrated your, Jehovah's, splendor, majesty and vigor” “above the heavens” or “beyond and over the visible skies, atmosphere and universe”. David shared how Jehovah God place and ascribed His “splendor and majesty” over all the skies and universe.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see that David knew of the superiority of Jehovah God in all the world. Jehovah placed his “splendor and majesty” over the “heavens and skies”, and the universe declares the “wonder and glory” of Him. David will say more about this in the remainder of this Psalm, but for now let us join him in recognizing who God is and the glory He displays. This same God sent His Son Jesus into the world to pay for the sins of mankind by dying on the cross, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life with Him. Let us recognize the wonder, splendor, glory and majesty of Jehovah God that is set above all the universe.
Next time David says, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings have you ordained strength”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
