When Enemies Turn Back - Psalms 9:3

In Psalms chapter nine David wrote, “I will praise you, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will show forth all your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in you: I will sing praise to your name, O you most High”, and in chapter nine and verse three of Psalms David told what will happen, “when my enemies are turned back” where we read,

When my enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at your presence.

The verse begins, When my enemies are turned back, ... David began with the words, “when my enemies” which means “at the time and moment my, David's, hating foes and adversaries” “are turned back” or “returned and retreated”. David referred to the time when his “foes and adversaries” would return and caused to retreat.

The verse goes on to say, “... they shall fall and perish at your presence.David continued with the words, “they shall fall” or “they, David's enemies, will stumble, stagger and totter in feebleness” “and perish” which means “and vanish, go astray, be destroyed and die” “at your presence” or “in the midst of your, Jehovah God's, face and countenance”. David wrote how his “enemies” would be destroyed when they encountered the countenance of Jehovah God.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David committed his “foes and adversaries” to the LORD. After exalting the LORD God in praise, David knew his “enemies” had no chance when they retreated when they would discover the “face” of God against them. David enjoyed the proper perspective of Jehovah God Himself, and he knew what would happen to his “enemies” in light of God's “presence”. This is an indication of the closeness in relationship that David had with God, and because God loves all people, He wants this type of relationship with them. This comes through belief and trust in His Son Jesus who died for the sins of the world. When we come to Jesus, humble ourselves before Him and ask Him to forgive our sins, He not only will forgive them, but He will also grant us eternal life and protection against our foes. Let us give Him praise and glory for His provision for our eternal salvation and for our necessary defense against opposing adversaries who come our way.

Next time David says, “you have maintained my right and my cause”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
