In Psalms chapter fifty seven David said, “Be you exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be above all the earth”, and in chapter fifty-seven and verse six of Psalms David said, “they have prepared a net for my steps” where we read,
They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down:
they have dug a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.
The verse begins, “They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down:” David began with the words, “they have prepared a net” or “they, David's enemies, have made ready, established and set a trap or snare” “for my steps” which means “my, David's, footsteps in order and rank”; “my soul” or “my, David's, inner man, mind, heart, will, appetite, desire, understanding, thinking, conscience and seat of emotions and passions” “is bowed down” which means “exists as bent, curved and lowered as in worship”. David said his enemies established a snare and trap for his every footstep, and this caused his heart and mind to be bent low.
The verse goes on to say, “they have dug a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Selah.” David continued with the words, “they have dug a pit” or “they, David's enemies, have excavated and bore open a concave shaped hole in the ground” “before me” which means “in front and in the presence of me, David”, “into the midst” or “in the middle” “whereof they are fallen themselves” which means “in which they, David's enemies, are cast down, settled and wasted away their own selves”. “Selah” or “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. David said his enemies bore a hole in the ground to set a trap for him, however, they fell into it themselves. David wanted his readers and listeners to pause and think about this idea.
When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David knew his enemies were setting traps and pits for him. They desired to capture David and be rid of him, however, they were seized by their own ill thought plans. Paul the apostle wrote, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap” (See Galatians 6:7), and those who make plans to trap people who belong to God will find their purposes eventually spoiled by Him. God desires to have an intimate personal relationship with every person, so He sent His Son Jesus to be crucified for the sins of the world. When we submit to Jesus as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be our protector against any foes who desire to snare and trap us in their wicked devices.
Next time David says, “my heart is fixed, O God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
