My Soul Among the Lions - Psalms 57:4

In Psalms chapter fifty seven David said of Jehovah God, “He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth”, and in chapter fifty-seven and verse four of Psalms David said, “My soul is among lions”, where we read,

My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men,

whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

The verse begins, My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, ...” David began with the words, “my soul” or “my, David's, inner man, heart, mind, will, desire and seat of emotions and passions” “is among the lions” which means “exists in the midst or middle of roaring lions, young lions or lionesses”: “and I lie” or “and I, David, rest, relax, lodge and ravish” “even among them that are set on fire” which means “indeed alongside people who are ablaze, scorched, kindled and flaming”, “even the sons of men” or “indeed the offspring and progeny belonging to people both male and female”. David referred to how his inner man, heart and mind was with ravenous “lions” and the offspring of people who were ablaze and flaming.

The verse goes on to say, “... whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.” David continued with the words, “whose teeth” or “the teeth in the mouth of the lion like offspring” “are spears and arrows” which means “are in likeness to lances and javelins which were used for thrusting and shafts and as darts used with a bow”, “and their tongue” or “and the wedges in the mouth used for speaking of these lion like flaming people” “a sharp sword” which means “like a sharpened knife, axe, dagger, mattock or other tool”. David said the “teeth” of the lion-like flaming people who were opposed to Him were sharpened like javelins and hunting “arrows”, and their “tongues” were like sharpened knives or daggers.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David compared his hating foes to ferocious “lions” who not only were “flaming”, but also used their “teeth and tongues” like sharpened weapons of war. God knew these people were against David, and He would accompany him through this difficult and adversarial time. God desires to be involved in every person's life, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He provided the way for this to happen. When we put our faith and trust in Jesus, we will be forgiven for our sins and granted everlasting life with God. Even when “lion-like flaming enemies” rise against us, Jehovah God will be our protection and defense even when their “teeth and tongues” are sharpened for battle.

Next time David says, “be you exalted, O God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
