The Groaning of the Prisoner - Psalms 102:20

In Psalms one hundred and two the Psalmist said, “This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD. For he has looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth”, and in chapter one hundred two and verse twenty of Psalms the Psalmist said, “to hear the groaning of the prisoner” where we read,

To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death;

The verse begins, To hear the groaning of the prisoner; The Psalmist began with the words, “to hear” or “to perceive, understand, listen and give heed with attention and consent to” “the groaning” which means “the crying, lamentation, shrieking and sighing” “of the prisoner” or “belonging to the captive and bondman”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God looked down from heaven and beheld the earth to listen to the crying of the captive and bondman.

The verse goes on to say,to loose those that are appointed to death; The Psalmist continued with the words, “to loose” or “to throw open, free, carve and engrave” “those that are appointed” which means “the people who exists as condemned and doomed” “to death” or “to be among the non-living, non-breathing, deceased and lifeless”. The Psalmist said that Jehovah God would also set free the people who were condemned to die and be breathless.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist said Jehovah God would also listen to the crying and lamentation of the bondmen and captives. God would also free the people who were condemned and doomed to be dead. The same may be said of us as we are “captives” and “appointed to die” to the bondage of sin and death before we receive Jesus Christ into our lives. We all have “sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and this is why God sent Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life, set us free from the penalty of eternal “death” and separation from God.

Next time the Psalmist says, “to declare the name of the LORD in Zion”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
