Brought Out of Darkness and Death - Psalms 107:14

In Psalms one hundred seven the Psalmist said the people of Israel, “rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High. Therefore he brought down their heart with labor; they fell down, and there was none to help. Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses”, and in chapter one hundred seven and verse fourteen of Psalms the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God, brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death where we read,

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bands in sunder.

The verse begins, He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “he brought them out of darkness” or “He, Jehovah God, led, delivered and carried forth them, the people of Israel, from obscurity, ignorance, wickedness, destruction and misery” “and the shadow of death” which means “and the deep darkness and shade belonging to the grave or place of the dead”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God delivered the people of Israel from obscurity, ignorance and misery as well as the deep darkness of the place of the dead.

The verse continues,... and broke their bands in sunder. The Psalmist added the words, “and broke their bands” or “and tore, rooted out and snapped their, the people of Israel's, bonds, halters and restraints” “in sunder” which means “apart and separated”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God tore apart the restraining bonds that surrounded the people of Israel.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist said when the people of Israel called upon Jehovah God for help, He delivered them from ignorance and wickedness and tore apart the restraints that were binding them. God delivers. God saves, and God frees people from their bondages when they humble themselves and call upon Him. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross to set people free from the penalty of sin which is death, (See Romans 6:23) and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and set us free from all bondages that have kept us captives and prisoners. Let us rejoice in Jesus who came to set us free. (See Galatians 5:1)

Next time the Psalmist repeats the phrase, “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
