In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist said the people of Israel, “joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead. Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague broke in upon them. Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse thirty-one of Psalms the Psalmist said, “that was counted unto him for righteousness” where we read,
And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.
The verse begins, “And that was counted unto him for righteousness ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “and that was counted unto him” or “and when Phinehas executed judgment, it was esteemed, calculated, charged and reckoned to him, Phinehas ” “for righteousness” which means “as rightness, justice, truthfulness, justification and prosperity”. The Psalmist said because Phinehas executed judgment on behalf of the people of Israel, it was reckoned and charged to him as rightness and justice.
The verse goes on to say, “... unto all generations for evermore.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “unto all generations” or “toward each, every, the whole and everyone of the periods, ages and posterity” “for evermore” which means “as far as and up until futurity, long duration, everlasting and perpetually”. The Psalmist said the “righteousness” reckoned to Phinehas extended to future ages and posterity.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist told of the benefit that was attributed to Phinehas because he intervened on behalf of the people of Israel. The people of Israel forsook the counsel of Jehovah God and they murmured against Him. A plague was sent upon them, and if it were not for Phinehas, perhaps all of Israel would have been destroyed. God will exalt the person who intercedes for others, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, God personally intervened for mankind. God loves us, and He wants to forgive our sins and give us eternal life with Him. When we surrender our lives to Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and reckon to our account blessings and prosperity for being obedient to Him and acting on His behalf.
Next time the Psalmist shares how the people of Israel, “angered him also at the waters of strife”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
