Provoking Moses' Spirit - Psalms 106:33

In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist speaking of Jehovah God and Moses said the people of Israel, “angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse thirty-three of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the people of Israel, “provoked his spirit” where we read,

Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spoke unadvisedly with his lips.

The verse begins, Because they provoked his spirit, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “because they provoked” or “since and on account that they, the people of Israel, were contentious, rebellious, refractory and disobedient toward” “his spirit” which means “his, Moses', mind, will, vivacity, vigor and disposition”. The Psalmist said the reason it went bad for Moses at the “waters of strife” was because they were contentious and disobedient toward Moses' mind, will and emotions.

The verse goes on to say,... so that he spoke unadvisedly with his lips. The Psalmist continued with the words, “so that he spoke unadvisedly” or “for which reason and cause he, Moses, uttered, declared and proclaimed in a rash, angry and thoughtless manner” “with his lips” which means “by the use of his, Moses', physical lips used for speaking and language”. (See Numbers 20:10-11) The Psalmist said Moses spoke in a harsh and angry manner when the people of Israel “provoked his spirit”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to when Moses said, “Hear now, you rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?” and “lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.” These words were not according to Jehovah God's instructions who told Moses to speak to the rock, and this brought the judgment of God upon him. God wants everyone to listen to Him, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we receive Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to speak in a wise manner according to His instructions and ways.

Next time the Psalmist shares how the people of Israel, “did not destroy the nations”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
