Israel Did Not Destroy the Nations - Psalms 106:34

In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist speaking of Moses said the people of Israel, “angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes, because they provoked his spirit, so that he spoke unadvisedly with his lips”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse thirty-four of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the people of Israel, “did not destroy the nations” where we read,

They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them:

The verse begins, They did not destroy the nations, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “they did not destroy” or “they, the people of Israel, in no way or manner exterminated, annihilated and devastated” “the nations” which means “the foreign, non-Hebrew and pagan people groups”. The Psalmist recalled how Israel was unable to conquer the foreign people groups because they did not listen to, murmured and complained against Jehovah God.

The verse continues,... concerning whom the LORD commanded them: The Psalmist added the words, “concerning whom” or “with reference and in regard to the people and nations that” “the LORD” which means “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “commanded them” or “told, avowed, avouched and declared to them, the people of Israel”. The Psalmist shared how the people of Israel did not exterminate the foreign nations that Jehovah God ordered them to annihilate. (See Judges 1)

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover how the Psalmist referred to the time of Israel's disobedience to God when He instructed them to exterminate the foreign nations within the promise land. God wanted these pagan nations destroyed because they would influence the people of Israel to forsake him, follow other gods and to commit sinful acts and ways. They disobeyed God, and this cost them greatly. God desires to save every person from their sinful ways, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth and help us to follow His ways.

Next time the Psalmist shares how the people of Israel, “were mingled among the heathen”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
