In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame unto him”, and in chapter eighteen and verse fourteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “the spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity” where we read,
The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
The verse begins, “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity;” Solomon began with the words, “the spirit of a man” or “the mind, vivacity, vigor, courage and temperance belonging to a person whether male or female” “will sustain his infirmity” which means “shall measure, seize, support and nourish the person's disease and sickness”. Solomon shared how the mind, courage and temperance of a person shall support and nourish the sickness of their physical body.
The verse goes on to say, “but a wounded spirit who can bear?” Solomon continued with the words, “but a wounded spirit” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a stricken, smitten, afflicted and broken mind, vivacity, vigor, courage and temperance” “who can bear” which means “what person whether male or female is able to lift up, carry, support or endure”? Solomon asked who among people is able to support or endure a broken mind and temperament.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see through Solomon that a person is able to support and nourish their physical body when they are afflicted, however, when the mind or temperament of a person is deeply stricken, they are unable to lift or endure it. God alone is able to heal the brokenhearted (See Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18), and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind to do so. When we surrender our lives to Him, He not only will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life, but He will also mend our broken hearts that have been afflicted by people and circumstances in the world. Let all who read these words humble themselves and bring their afflicted hearts and broken spirits to Jesus who not only knows what we feel, but also has a cure for every ailment in our bodies and souls.
Next time Solomon says, “the heart of the prudent gets knowledge”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
