They Rebelled Against the Words of God - Psalms 107:11

In Psalms one hundred seven the Psalmist said, “Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men. For he satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness. Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron”, and in chapter one hundred seven and verse eleven of Psalms the Psalmist shared how the people were sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, because they rebelled against the words of God where we read,

Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:

The verse begins, Because they rebelled against the words of God, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “because they rebelled” or “since and on account that they, the people of Israel, were contentious, disobedient and provoking” “against the words of God” which means “in opposition to the speeches, utterances, declarations and proclamations belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”. The Psalmist said the reason the people of Israel were sitting in darkness, the shadow of death, affliction and iron was because they were contentious and disobedient to the utterances of the Divine judge Jehovah God.

The verse goes on to say,... and contemned the counsel of the most High: The Psalmist continued with the words, “and contemned the counsel” or “and spurned, despised and abhorred the purpose, advice, plan and prudence” “of the most High” which means “belonging to the uppermost, exalted and Highest One”. The Psalmist said the people of Israel spurned and despised the advice and purpose of Jehovah God who is the “Most High God”.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist gave the reason the people of Israel were suffering from depression, misery, the shadow of death and affliction. They forsook God's words, and they despised His advice and counsel. God knows best for us, and He knew we needed Him not only for salvation from sins, but also to guide us into all truth so that our lives will be pleasing to Him. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to live a perfect life, die on the cross, be raised from the grave three days later and to provide His Holy Spirit to us to lead us according to His purposes, plan and will. God loves us, and when we forsake His advise and spurn His words, we do so at our own demise. Let us carefully consider the words of God, obey them and ask Him to help us never to despise what He says.

Next time the Psalmist shares how Jehovah God, brought down their heart with labor, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
