In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared about the wedding and how the bride asked, “Who is this that comes out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant? Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel”, and in chapter three and verse eight of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “they all hold swords, being expert in war” where we read,
They all hold swords, being expert in war:
every man has his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
The verse begins, “They all hold swords, being expert in war:” Solomon began with the words, “they all hold swords” or “they, the sixty valiant men, each, every, the whole and every one grasp, seize and take hold of knives, axes, daggers and mattocks”, “being expert in war” which means “existing as learned, taught, exercised and trained in fighting and battle”. Solomon shared how the bride noticed that every one of the “valiant men” who surrounded “Solomon's” bedchamber was equipped with knives and cutting instruments as they were trained in fighting and battle.
The verse continues, “every man has his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.” Solomon added the words, “every man has his sword” or “each, all, the whole and every one of the male human beings possess their knives, axes, daggers and mattocks” “upon his thigh” which means “on the outside of the upper leg” “because of fear in the night” or “since and on account that terror and dread exist within the nighttime”. Solomon shared how the bride noticed that each of the “valiant men” wore their cutting blades upon their upper legs on account of the terror and dread that existed within the nighttime.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon shared the bride's observance of the weapons the battle trained “valiant men” wore on their upper legs. They had knives and cutting instruments strapped to them because terror existed in the nighttime where they were. In other words, they were ready for battle. God knows there is a spiritual battle for our souls, and Jesus Christ as the “groom” of the “Church, His bride” is equipped with angels who will go to battle against the spiritual entities that are against us. (See Ephesians 6:12) God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and thereby conquered death and hell (See Revelation 20:14), and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and go to battle for us whenever terror and dread close at hand.
Next time the Solomon shares more about the wedding day and how the bride says, “King Solomon made himself a chariot” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
