Flagons and Apples - Song of Songs 2:5

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said about the groom, “he brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love”, and in chapter two and verse five of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples where we read,

Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.

The verse begins, Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: Solomon began with the words, “stay me with flagons” or “support, uphold, strengthen and sustain me, the bride, by the use of raisin-cakes or other comfits”, “comfort me with apples” which means “spread out and refresh me, the bride, by the use of apple fruit”. Solomon shared how the bride desired to be fed raisin-cakes and apples to sustain and refresh her.

The verse continues, for I am sick of love. Solomon added the words, “for I am sick” or “because, since and on account that I, the bride, exist as weak, wounded and grieved” “of love” which means “with great affection and appetite”. Solomon shared how the bride said she was weak and wounded with great affection and appetite toward her groom.

When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the bride instructed the daughters of Jerusalem to support and sustain her with raisin-cakes and to refresh her with apple fruit because she was “love sick”. In other words, she was consumed with the groom's love. God wants us to have this type of love toward Him, and when we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a love for Him that makes us swoon in passionate and affectionate love toward Him.

Next time Solomon says, his left hand is under my head, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
