In the book of Proverbs Solomon told his son, “the curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesses the habitation of the just. Surely he scorns the scorners: but he gives grace unto the lowly”, and in chapter three and verse thirty-five of Proverbs Solomon said, “the wise shall inherit glory” where we read,
The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
The verse begins, “The wise shall inherit glory:”. Solomon began with the words, “the wise” or “the skillful, shrewd, crafty, subtle and learned” “shall inherit glory” which means “will acquire and take possession of honor, abundance, riches, splendor, dignity and reputation”. Solomon shared how people who are skillful and learned will take possession of honor, dignity and reputation.
The verse goes on to say, “but shame shall be the promotion of fools.” Solomon continued with the words, “but shame” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover dishonor, disgrace and misfortune” “shall be the promotion” which means “will exist as the raising, exalting or growing up” “of fools” or “belonging to people who are stupid, dullards, simpletons and arrogant”. Solomon said dishonor and disgrace would be the exalting of people who are arrogant and dullards.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon contrasted the person who is shrewd and skillful with the person who is arrogant and stupid. The shrewd person will receive honor, and the foolish person will be made ashamed. God invites every person to have a personal relationship with Him, and He will forgive our sins and grant us everlasting life when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we humble ourselves and surrender to Him, we will be honored, however if we are foolish and refuse his invitation, dishonor, disgrace and misfortune follow closely behind.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Solomon say, “Hear, you children, the instruction of a father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
