Let Your Heart Retain My Words - Proverbs 4:4

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother”, and in chapter four and verse four of Proverbs Solomon said, he taught me also … let your heart retain my words” where we read,

He taught me also, and said unto me, let your heart retain my words:

keep my commandments, and live.

The verse begins, “He taught me also, and said unto me, let your heart retain my words:. Solomon began with the words, “he taught me also” or “he, Solomon's father David, cast forth, pointed out, showed, and instructed me, Solomon, even so and indeed”, “and said unto me” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to me, Solomon”, “let your heart” or “allow and permit your, Solomon's, soul, mind, will, desires, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “retain my words” which means “grasp, hold up, support, keep and seize my, King David's, utterances, speeches and proclamations”. Solomon shared how his father King David gave him instruction to allow himself to seize and keep his utterances and speeches.

The verse continues, “keep my commandments, and live.” Solomon added the word, “keep” or “guard, watch over, protect, preserve, regard and observe” “my commandments” which means “my, Solomon's father David's, ordinances, precepts and laws”, “and live” or “and remain alive, be quickened, revive, refresh and restored to life”. Solomon was reminded of how his father told him to watch over and observe his ordinances and laws, and they would cause him to be quickened and refreshed in living.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon was reminded of how his father gave him good instruction, and Solomon was to keep his father's words. By observing King David's laws and commands, Solomon would remain alive and refreshed in his life. God wants the same for us, and because He desires a personal intimate relationship with us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and not only provide His instructions and commands, but also the power and ability to live according to them by His Holy Spirit. (See John 16:13 and Acts 1:8)

Next time Solomon says, get wisdom, get understanding, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
