Beholding Transgressors and Grieved - Psalms 119:158

In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said, “Many are my persecutors and my enemies; yet do I not decline from your testimonies”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse one hundred and fifty-eight of Psalms the Psalmist said, “I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved” where we read,

I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not your word.

The verse begins, I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; The Psalmist began with the words, “I beheld the transgressors” or “I, the Psalmist, saw, observed, noticed, discovered and discerned people who act treacherously, deceitfully and offensively”, “and was grieved” which means “and existed as loathing, detesting, afflicted and suffering”. The Psalmist shared how he observed people who were deceitful and treacherous, and he loathed and detested their behavior.

The verse continues, “because they kept not your word. The Psalmist added the words, “because they kept not” or “since and on account that they, the transgressors, did not in any way or manner guard, watch over, observe or retain” “your word” which means “your, Jehovah God's, speech, utterance and commandment”. The Psalmist said the reason he was “grieved” by “transgressors” was because they did not observe Jehovah God's speech and commandment.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist observed the acts of people who acted treacherously, and what he saw caused him great affliction and suffering. These people did not retain Jehovah God's commandment, and they lived according to their own desires. (See Romans 1) God knows people have violated His law, and therefore they have sinned. (See Romans 3:23) Death is the wage for sin, and because everyone sins, everyone shall die. (See Romans 6:23) God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16), and His invitation is for everyone to receive Jesus as their “Savior and Lord”. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to love and “keep” His “word” in this life and for all eternity.

Next time the Psalmist says, “consider how I love your precepts”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
