Those Who Follow Mischief Draw Near - Psalms 119:150

In Psalms one hundred nineteen the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “Hear my voice according unto your lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to your judgment”, and in chapter one hundred nineteen and verse one hundred fifty of Psalms the Psalmist said, “they draw near that follow after mischief” where we read,

They draw near that follow after mischief: they are far from your law.

The verse begins, They draw near that follow after mischief: The Psalmist began with the words, “they draw near” or “they, the people whether male or female, approach, cause to be present and make ready” “that follow after mischief” which means “who pursue, run after, chase and attend closely to wickedness, evil, mischievous purposes and licentious behavior”. The Psalmist referred to people who pursue wickedness and evil that came near to him.

The verse continues, “they are far from your law. The Psalmist added the words, “they are far from” or “they, the people whether male or female, are distant, removed and put at a distance apart and separate from” “your law” which means “your, Jehovah God's, direction, instruction, teaching, custom, manner and codes of law”. The Psalmist said these people were also distant from Jehovah God's direction and instruction.

When we consider the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn how he knew people were pursuing him who were running toward wickedness and evil because they were distant from God's direction and instruction for life. God knows what is best for us, and He provided His commandments to provide and protect us while we live. He knew we would sin and violate His law, so He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect us from those who pursue evil and are distant from His “law”.

Next time the Psalmist says, “you are near, O LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
