Princes have Persecuted Me - Psalms 119:161

Psalms one hundred nineteen and verse one hundred and sixty one begins the next section of this chapter with the Hebrew letter “SCHIN” where the Psalmist said, “princes have persecuted me without a cause” where we read,

Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart stands in awe of your word.

The verse begins, Princes have persecuted me without a cause: The Psalmist began with the words, “princes have persecuted me” or “rulers, leaders, chiefs, captains and nobles have followed after, pursued and harassed me, the Psalmist” “without a cause” which means “not having a cause, purpose or advantage”. The Psalmist referred to the leaders and nobles who pursued and harassed him with no reason to do so.

The verse goes on to say, “but my heart stands in awe of your word. The Psalmist added the words, “but my heart stands in awe” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover my, the Psalmist's, soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and passions trembles, dreads and stays in fear” “of your word” which means “pertaining to your, Jehovah God's, speech, utterance, business, occupation, acts, matter and manner”. The Psalmist declared that his soul, mind and will trembled before the speech and utterance of Jehovah God.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we discover that the people in opposition to him were leaders, and they harassed him without a reason. His response was to remain in reverence to what God has to say. God's “word” is valuable, and even when chiefs and leaders pursue us, we can rely upon His declarations. God loves us, and He gave us the scriptures to discover how reliable He is. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to reverence His “word” regardless of the status and position of those who come after us.

Next time the Psalmist says to Jehovah God, “I rejoice at your word” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
