Vain to Eat the Bread of Sorrows - Psalms 127:2

In Psalms one hundred twenty-seven the Psalmist said, “Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman wakes but in vain”, and in chapter one hundred twenty-seven and verse two of Psalms the Psalmist said It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows” where we read,

It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows:

for so he gives his beloved sleep.

The verse begins, It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: The Psalmist began with the words, “it is vain for you” or “it exists as falsehood, emptiness and worthlessness for a person whether male or female” “to rise up early” which means “to arise, stand up, be established and be confirmed at the start of the day, in the morning or at dawn”, “to sit up late” or “to dwell, remain and abide at a delayed time, behind and into the nighttime”, “to eat the bread” which means “ to consume and devour the food and grain” “of sorrows” or “of pain, hurt, labor and hardship”. The Psalmist shared how it is worthless and empty to get up early in the morning or to stay up late into the night to consume painful and hurtful food.

The verse continues, for so he gives his beloved sleep. The Psalmist added the words, “for so he gives” or “because, since and on account that he, Jehovah God, grants, bestows and furnishes” “his beloved sleep” which means “his, Jehovah God's, amiable and lovely ones the ability to rest and go to sleep”. The Psalmist said Jehovah God provides “rest and sleep” to the ones He loves.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we see how he addressed those who are unable to rest. They wake up early; they stay up late and they are continually consumed by their worrisome hurts and pain. God desires to have a personal intimate relationship with us through His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we yield to Him, He forgives our sins, grants us everlasting life and will provide the peace and rest of His Holy Spirit to be with us in all our sorrow-fillled difficulties and troubles.

Next time the Psalmist says, “children are an heritage of the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
