What Shall Be Given to You False Tongue? - Psalms 120:3

In Psalms one hundred twenty the Psalmist said, “Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue”, and in chapter one hundred and twenty and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist asked, “what shall be given unto you?” where we read,

What shall be given unto you? or what shall be done unto you, you false tongue?

The verse begins, What shall be given unto you? The Psalmist began with the words, “what shall be given” or “of what kind, wherewith and by what means will be granted, bestowed and ascribed” “unto you” which means “toward you, deceitful tongue”? The Psalmist wondered what could be granted to the deceitful tongue.

The verse goes on to say, “or what shall be done unto you, you false tongue? The Psalmist continued with the words, “or what shall be done unto you” or “or of what kind, wherewith and by what means will be added, increased and joined toward you, deceitful tongue”, “you false tongue” which means “you lax, slack, deceitful and treacherous physical tongue in the mouth used for speaking”? The Psalmist wanted to know what was to be added, performed or increased toward the deceitful “tongue”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist began to address not only what could be “given” to the deceitful “tongue”, but also what could be added to it. The idea was that the Psalmist was considering what could be “given and done” to people who speak lies and proclaim falsehood. Lying is against God's law, (See Exodus 20:16) and those who violate His law sin against Him. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. Although “false tongues” and every word of people shall be judged (See Matthew 12:26), when we put our faith and trust in Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and contend with those who use their God given “tongues” to speak deceitfully and lie.

Next time the Psalmist shares about, “sharp arrows of the mighty”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
