The Proud Waters - Psalms 124:5

In Psalms one hundred twenty-four David said, “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say, If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us. Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us. Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul”, and in chapter one hundred and twenty-four and verse five of Psalms David said, “then the proud waters had gone over our soul” where we read,

Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

The verse begins, “Then the proud waters ... David began with the word, “then” or “at that time” “the proud waters” which means “the churning, raging, turbulent and insolent watercourses and floods” would have done the following. David said the raging and turbulent floods would have done the following to him and his people if the LORD had not been with them.

The verse continues, “... had gone over our soul. David added the words, “had gone over” or “had passed, taken away and marched over” “our soul” which means “our, David and his people's, heart, mind, will, desires, consciences, living beings and seat of emotions and passions”. David said the raging floods” would have overflowed his and his fellow country-men's hearts, minds and wills if Jehovah God was not with them.

When we think through David's words in this verse, we see how he knew the onslaught of the people who rose up against him and his people was like raging waters that would have overwhelmed them if Jehovah God was not by their side. God loves people, and His desire is to be their provision and protection. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and protect us from the turbulent waves of prideful people who rise up against us.

Next time David says, “blessed be the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
