Our Soul Filled with Scorning - Psalms 123:4

In Psalms one hundred twenty-three the Psalmist said, “Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt”, and in chapter one hundred and twenty three and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist said, “our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease” where we read,

Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease,

and with the contempt of the proud.

The verse begins, Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “our soul is exceedingly filled” or “our, the Psalmist and his fellow country-men's, hearts, minds, wills, desires, consciences, living beings and seats of emotions and passions exist as abounding, numerous and greatly satisfied, sated and surfeited” “with the scorning” which means “by the use of the mocking, derision, stammering and scoffing” “of those that are at ease” or “pertaining to people whether male or female who exist in quiet, security and pride”. The Psalmist said he and his fellow country-men's hearts, minds and wills were abundantly satiated with prideful people who mocked and scoffed at them in their secure and prideful manner.

The verse goes on to say,and with the contempt of the proud. The Psalmist continued with the words, “and with the contempt” or “and by the use of an evil attitude, disrespect and shame” “of the proud” which means “belonging to people who were disdainful and haughty”. The Psalmist also included the disrespect and shame that was exhibited by these haughty people.

When we meditate upon the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn how he and his fellow countrymen were continually contending with prideful and disrespectful people who were scoffing at them and making their lives miserable. These haughty foes caused the Psalmist to appeal to Jehovah God for His “mercy”. Sometimes God will allow prideful people and circumstances to come into our lives to humble us before Him. Because He loves us, He will permit us to be humbled to realize His own suffering when He gave us His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for our sins. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and fill us with “mercy” when prideful people scorn us and treat us with “contempt”.

Next time we begin a new chapter where David says, “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
