Our Eyes Wait upon the LORD - Psalms 123:2

In Psalms one hundred twenty-three the Psalmist said, “Unto you lift I up my eyes, O you that dwell in the heavens”, and in chapter one hundred and twenty three and verse two of Psalms the Psalmist said, “our eyes wait upon the LORD our God” where we read,

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.

The verse begins, Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; The Psalmist began with the words, “Behold, as the eyes of servants” or “lo, look, consider and observe, similar and in likeness to the physical eyes belonging to people of servile condition, slaves and worshipers” “look unto the hand of their masters” which means “behold, gaze and put their eyes toward the hand of power, strength and might belonging to the servants' lords, superintendents and reverent leaders”, “and as the eyes” or “and similar and in likeness to the physical eyes” “of a maiden” which means “belonging to a maid-servant, slave-girl or mistress” “unto the hand of her mistress” or “toward the power, strength and might belonging to the maid-servant's lady, queen and female ruler”. The Psalmist referred to the way “servants” put their eyes upon their rulers, and both male and female servants fastened their gaze upon the power, might and strength of their masters.

The verse goes on to say, “so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us. The Psalmist continued with the words, “so our eyes” or “even so and indeed our, the Psalmist and his people, cause their physical eyes to” “wait upon the LORD our God” which means “hold fast toward Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “until that he have mercy upon us” or “till the time that he, Jehovah God, extends his grace, favor and pity on us, the Psalmist and his people”. The Psalmist said he and his fellow believers fastened their physical eyes upon Jehovah God till the time that he extends His grace, favor and pity upon them.

When we think through the Psalmist's words in this verse, we discover how he and his people fastened their eyes upon Jehovah God for provision and protection. In the same manner that servants look to their masters for provision, the Psalmist referred to the way he and his fellow believers did the same. God wants us to look to Him for provision and protection, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to look to Him to supply anything we need. (See Philippians 4:19)

Next time the Psalmist says, “have mercy upon us, O LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
