In Psalms one hundred twenty we continue the first of the “songs of ascent” when the people were worshiping the LORD as they traveled to Jerusalem three times per year where the Psalmist said, “in my distress, I called upon the LORD, and he heard me”, and in chapter one hundred and twenty and verse two of Psalms the Psalmist said, “deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips” where we read,
Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
The verse begins, “Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, ...” The Psalmist began with the words, “deliver my soul” or “rescue and liberate my, the Psalmist's, heart, mind, will, desires, conscience, living being and seat of emotions and passions”, “O LORD” which means “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “from lying lips” or “separate and apart from physical lips that are deceptive, disappointing, false and wrong”. The Psalmist appealed to Jehovah God to rescue his heart, mind and will from people who speak deceptively and falsely.
The verse continues, “and from a deceitful tongue.” The Psalmist added the words, “and from” or “and separate and apart from” “a deceitful tongue” which means “a lax, slack, treacherous and slothful physical tongue”. The Psalmist also wanted to be separated from people who speak with a slack and treacherous “tongue”.
When we consider the Psalmist's words in this verse, we discover how he wanted Jehovah God to rescue him from people who lie and speak deceptively. There are many people who use their “tongues” to speak with lies, deceit and treacherous talk, and they violate the laws and ways of God when they do. (See Exodus 20:16) God loves us even though we and others are deceptive, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die for our errors, lies and wrongs. God wants to save us, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Lord and Savior”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and rescue and protect us from people who use their lips and tongues to speak deceptively.
Next time the Psalmist asks, “what shall be given to you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
