Psalms one hundred twenty-seven begins with the phrase, “[[A Song of degrees for Solomon.]]” which breaks down “A Song” or “a musical or lyrical ode” “of degrees” which means “pertaining to steps, stairs and ascents” “for Solomon” or “for the benefit of Solomon whose name means peace and was son of David by Bathsheba, the third king of Israel and the author of Proverbs and Song of Songs”, and in verse one the Psalmist said “except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it” where we read,
Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it:
except the LORD keep the city, the watchman wakes but in vain.
The verse begins, “Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it:” The Psalmist began with the words, “except the LORD” or “unless, if, whether, in case and rather that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “build the house” which means “establish and cause the dwelling place, habitation and abode to be set up and made permanent”, “they labor in vain” or “they, the people who are as follows, toil and work severely and with irksomeness, emptiness, vanity, falsehood and worthlessness” “that build it” which means “who establish, set up and erect it, the house”. The Psalmist said unless Jehovah God establishes the dwelling place or abode, the people who work severely to erect it do so in a worthless and empty manner.
The verse goes on to say, “except the LORD keep the city, the watchman wakes but in vain.” The Psalmist continued with the words, “except the LORD” or “unless, if, whether, in case and rather that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “keep the city” which means “guard, observe, watch over and protect the town, place of waking and encampment”, “the watchman wakes” or “the person who guards, looks out and stays awake” “but in vain” which means “in emptiness, vanity, falsehood and worthlessness”. The Psalmist added that unless Jehovah God guards and watches over the town or place of waking, the sentinels who guard it do so in emptiness and vanity.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist shared that it is necessary for Jehovah God to be involved in establishing a dwelling place and guarding a town. God wants to establish our dwelling places, and He alone is able to guard the towns in which we live. He involves us in His work because He loves us, and when we align with Him, He becomes our provision and protection. God gave us His Son Jesus to die on the cross so we may be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life with Him and relate to Him on a daily basis. When we yield ourselves to Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”, God becomes our protection and defense regardless of what we build or where we live.
Next time the Psalmist says, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
