If Not for the LORD by Our Side - Psalms 124:1

Psalms one hundred twenty-four begins with the phrase, “[[A Song of degrees of David.]]” which breaks down, “A Song” or “a musical or lyrical ode” “of degrees” which means “pertaining to steps, stairs and ascents” “of David” or “belonging to David whose name means blessed and was the second king of Israel”, and in verse one David said, “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side” where we read,

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

The verse begins, “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, ... David began with the words, “if it had not been the LORD” or “unless, in case and except that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One true God” “who was on our side” which means “who, Jehovah God, existed, become, came to pass, happened and fallen toward the Psalmist and his fellow countrymen”. David considered the idea of Jehovah God not being alongside him and his fellow countrymen.

The verse continues, “... now may Israel say; David added the word, “now” or “at this time and moment” “may Israel say” which means “might Israel, whose name means God prevails and was the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob, pray, use entreaty and exhortation”. David desired that the people of the nation of “Israel” to make a proclamation unto Jehovah God.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how David considered the idea of Jehovah God not being with him and his people. This caused the people of “Israel” to be motivated to make declarations to Jehovah God. God wants to have a personal intimate relationship with us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind so we might have that relationship. When we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to join with “Israel” in crying out to Him and having Him “on our side”.

Next time David says, “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
