Lifting Up My Eyes to God - Psalms 123:1

Psalms one hundred twenty-three begins with the phrase, “[[A Song of degrees.]]” which breaks down, “A Song” or “a musical or lyrical ode” “of degrees” which means “pertaining to steps, stairs and ascents” where the Psalmist said to Jehovah God in verse one, “Unto you lift I up my eyes” where we read,

Unto you lift I up my eyes, O you that dwell in the heavens.

The verse begins, “Unto you lift I up my eyes, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “unto you” or “toward you, Jehovah God” “lift I up my eyes” which means “I, the Psalmist, raise, bear up, and exalt my, the Psalmist's, physical eyes”. The Psalmist said he raised his physical eyes toward Jehovah God.

The verse continues, “... O you that dwell in the heavens. The Psalmist added the words, “O you that dwell” or “O you, Jehovah God, that lives, abides, remains and makes habitation” “in the heavens” which means “within the visible sky, atmosphere, universe and abode of Jehovah God”. The Psalmist referred to the the sky, atmosphere and Heavenly realm as the abiding place of Jehovah God.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how the Psalmist determined to raise his physical eyes toward Jehovah God who lives within the visible sky, atmosphere, universe and Heavenly realm. There is no better place to raise our eyes than toward God, and He loves for us to do so. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins because He wants to have a personal intimate relationship with us. When we submit our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of putting our gaze upon Him at all times.

Next time the Psalmist says, “our eyes wait upon the LORD our God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
